‘You Don’t Know What This Means To Me’: 108-Year-Old Man’s Reaction When He Met His Namesake Grandson

Meet Mr. Esmond Allcock, born outside of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, in 1910. Distinguished and charming, he celebrated his 108th birthday on January 26, officially earning the title of the oldest man in Canada. A devoted husband, father to six, grandfather to 17, great-grandfather to 36, and great-great-grandfather to 12.

Mr. Allcock holds a special place in my heart as my great-grandfather, whom I named my son after. While many people’s memories of their great-grandfathers may fade with time, I’ve been fortunate to have him by my side for the past 30 years.

One of his cherished tales recounts my early years, when I would grasp his hands and coax him into guiding me around the room as I learned to walk. All it took was a simple request of “Walk Walk,” and off we’d go, creating lasting memories. As I grew older, he fondly referred to me as his little buddy.

Upon learning of my pregnancies, Mr. Allcock joyously spread the news to all his children, proud to see his family expanding. With the arrival of my second son, he humorously remarked on his role in the growing family tree, noting that despite his numerous descendants, none had chosen to honor him by naming their child after him. Determined to carry on the family legacy, my husband and I decided to name our newborn after him.

On January 11, 2017, my son Esmond entered the world, nearly 107 years after his great-great-grandfather. Eager to introduce the newest member of our family to his namesake, I embarked on a journey to the neighboring province.

Upon our arrival, Mr. Allcock initially struggled to recognize me. However, his attention was quickly captured by the presence of young Esmond. Midway through our visit, his memory was sparked, recalling me as the “Walk Walk girl” from his cherished stories.
