Long-awaited happiness: how the Merkulov family lives, whose quintuplets were born three years ago

Around three years ago, the media spotlight shone on a couple from Primorye, Russia, marking a momentous occasion with the birth of quintuplets—an extraordinary event in the region and the country.

Anastasia and Alexander Merkulov, both employed in the railway industry, discovered an instant connection and soon tied the knot. Eager to start a family, they faced challenges as Anastasia experienced early miscarriages. Undeterred, she remained hopeful, her faith unwavering. Their persistence was rewarded when Anastasia became pregnant again, this time with multiple babies. She was hospitalized early on to ensure the pregnancy’s viability, and during an initial ultrasound, the couple joyously learned they were expecting quadruplets.

The pregnancy progressed to 32 weeks before a cesarean section was planned. The surgery proved strenuous for Anastasia, who battled through a precarious condition post-operation. In her recovery, she received astonishing news from her doctor: there were actually five newborns, not four—a girl had remained undetected, concealed behind her siblings.

The Merkulov family was elated; their dream had become a fivefold reality. Many wondered how they managed with such a large brood. Initially, Anastasia handled the infant care solo, with Alexander assisting post-work. Once the babies began to crawl at six months, Alexander took leave to support more actively.

Residing in a family-inherited home, the Merkulovs’ bond deepened amidst their parenting journey. Alexander embraced his role wholeheartedly, tending to the children and bringing joy through music. Anastasia expressed their enduring love and newfound depth of responsibility on her social media, encapsulating the profound impact of their expanded family.
